You might not be aware, but there’s a Climate Change Conference taking place in Marrakesh, Morocco right now.

The US Election has been mostly overshadowing the conference, but today, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) released its provisional Statement on the Status of the Global Climate in 2016.

And it’s not good.

According to the report, “It is very likely that 2016 will be the hottest year on record.”

Which means that, if the above statement turns out to be true, 16 of the 17 hottest years since 1880 will have been in the 21st century, with the only ‘outlier’ being 1998. What’s more, 2015 was previously the hottest year on record with an anomaly of 0.90°C (above pre-industrial levels) and marked “the 39th consecutive year (since 1977) that the annual temperature has been above the 20th century average.”

Better make that 40 straight years.

“Another year. Another record. The high temperatures we saw in 2015 are set to be beaten in 2016,” said WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas.

And that frighteningly high 2015 record mark of 0.90°C? Well, it looks like it’s about to be smashed. In fact, from January to September 2016, global temperatures were roughly 1.2°C above pre-industrial levels.

The report also notes:

Temperatures were above the 1961-90 average over the vast majority of land areas. In parts of Arctic Russia around the Ob River estuary and Novaya Zemlya, they were 6°C to 7°C above average. Many other Arctic and sub-Arctic regions in Russia, Alaska and northwest Canada were at least 3°C above average.

Here are the previous 16 warmest years on record:

Just another reason President-Elect Trump making decisions like this one affects all of us.
