Two young girls were rushed to hospital in critical condition after a shooting at a Scarborough playground early this evening.

Speaking about the incident, TPS police chief Mark Saunders said the “despicable” incident happened just after 5 pm, when police responded to a call at McCowan Road and Steeles Avenue.

“When [police] arrived on scene they found two victims, a five-year-old and a nine-year-old had been shot,” he said.

“The younger one is reported to be in critical condition and is undergoing surgery,” he said, adding that the older one is scheduled to undergo surgery as well.

“Obviously, these two were not the intended targets,” said Saunders. “Some cowards came into this neighbourhood and open-fired into a playground.”

Asked if he had any idea who the intended target was, Saunders replied he was unable to give any information on that aspect at this point and didn’t “want to speculate.”

He added that police are “putting every resource on this to make sure that we apprehend the person that would be motivated to do something like this in the City of Toronto and we will be taking aggressive action towards resolving this particular investigation.”

Saunders noted the investigation is still in the very early stages and that police are canvassing the neighbourhood for evidence and clues.

“Right now we are definitely looking for a subject with a firearm that was last seen driving out of this area,” he added.
