Health Canada issues nationwide recall over popular children's snack

Jul 23 2018, 10:25 pm

Ritz Bits Sandwiches, a popular children’s snack, are being hit with a nationwide recall.

On Friday, July 20, Mondelēz Canada declared a recall for the Christie-branded snack due to possible Salmonella contamination.

Consumers with the product in either cheese or pizza flavour are asked to check the UPC and code on the product to see if they’re affected.

While there have been no reported illnesses at this time, recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the store where they were purchased.

Health Canada explains that food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled, but can still make you sick.

Short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea can affect people of any age. Young children, pregnant women, elderly people, and those with weakened immune systems are especially at risk.

Since the recall was triggered by a recall in another country, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is conducting a food safety investigation, which may lead to a recall in other products.
