A special weather statement has been issued for Toronto given the strong winds expected for this afternoon and evening.

According to Environment Canada, there will be, “strong and gusty southwest winds this afternoon into this evening.”

A deepening low pressure system that’s currently racing across Lake Huron and Georgian Bay will bring some shower and thunderstorm activity, along with strong and gusty southwest winds later today.

We’re expected to see gusts of wind up to 70 to 80 km/hr across most of the region this afternoon.

Later today as a cold front blasts through Southern Ontario, wind gusts of up to 90 km/hr are possible.

Environment Canada says if wind gusts are strong enough, they may cause minor tree and building damage. A few local power outages are possible.

However, the winds will shift to northwest in the wake of the front by this evening, then diminish quickly later tonight as a high pressure ridge moves in.
