After initially issuing a special weather statement for Toronto, Environment Canada has now issued a freezing rain warning.

According to the weather agency, freezing rain is likely this evening.

“A significant area of precipitation is expected to move into the area early this evening,” reads the warning. “A few hours of freezing rain are possible before precipitation changes to rain later in the evening, especially for areas away from Lake Ontario.”

Environment Canada warns also warns that surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery.

Be sure to take extra care when walking or driving in affected areas.

Freezing rain warnings are issued when rain falling in sub-zero temperatures creates ice build-up and icy surfaces.

Earlier, Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for Toronto. In its statement, it said that during the day, a mix of light snow will be mixed with ice pellets, amounting to 2 cm.
