As wildfires continue to burn across BC, thousands of residents face evacuation orders and risk losing their homes and properties.

If you are looking for a way to help those affected, the provincial government recommends donating to the Red Cross.

“We know people in BC and across the country are concerned and want to help. Donating to the Red Cross is a great way to do that,” said Doug Donaldson, Minister of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development, in a release.

Donations to the Red Cross will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the provincial government until October 12, 2018.

EmergencyInfoBC notes that the collection of donation items (such as furniture or clothing) is “not needed at this time and the best way to support people affected by the current wildfire situation is through a financial donation.”

Those wishing to help can make a monetary donation to the Red Cross online or by calling 1-800-418-1111.

Other organizations accepting donations include BC Liquor StoresCanada Helps, Food Banks BC, the BC SPCA, and The Salvation Army.

EmergencyInfoBC is reminding residents to only donate to reputable well-established charities and to not give to door-to-door or over the phone campaigns.
