6 Chinese New Year events to check out in Toronto

Chinese New Year falls on January 28 this year.

The massive celebration, known as Spring Festival in China, marks the first day on the Chinese lunar calendar and the start of Year of the Rooster.

Although the traditional holiday period is 23 days, Mainland China will be celebrating the new year over seven days from January 27 to February 2.

In and around the Greater Toronto Area, there are several festivals celebrating the new year. Check them out below.

Chinese New Year Gala

CNTV Chinese New Year Gala 2017 is the largest and the costliest extravaganza for the Chinese Community. Over eight hundred elite artists from Mainland China and Canada perform in the preeminent social networking event for the Chinese community.

Chinese New Year Celebrations at Pacific Mall

Head to the largest indoor Chinese mall in North America to start the Chinese New Year celebrations! Entertainment starts at 10 pm and leads to the countdown at midnight for the arrival of the Year of the Rooster. Celebrations at Pacific Mall continue until January 29.

Dragon Ball 2017

The tradition continues! The Yee Hong Community Wellness Foundation’s annual benefit gala returns to celebrate Chinese New Year.

Where: Allstream Centre, Exhibition Place, 105 Princes’ Blvd.
When: January 28 at 5:45 pm

Toronto Chinese New Year Ball

The Hong Kong-Canada Business Association celebrates the Year of the Rooster with a ball that includes traditional lion dancing, Chinese games, food, and more.

Where: Hilton Suites Markham, 8500 Warden Avenue
When: February 4 at 6 pm

The Year of the Rooster: A Chinese New Year Celebration

For its fourth annual Chinese New Year concert, theToronto Symphony Orchestra presents a festive program celebrating the Year of the Rooster. Concert runs approximately two hours.

Where: Roy Thomson Hall, 60 Simcoe Street
When: February 4 at 7:30 pm

LunarFest 2017

LunarFest is Canada’s premier presenter of contemporary expression in Asian arts and culture. It endeavours to reach new Canadians and those who have been here for many generations to share in the diversity of Canada. LunarFest is a festival that brings together Soul, Art and Life on one stage. And it celebrates the year of the Rooster at Metro Hall next month.
