CIBC and BMO are warning customers of a personal information data hack that took place on Sunday, May 27.

The CIBC owned Simplii-Financial sent a notice to customers stating that it has “implemented enhanced online security measures in response to a claim received on Sunday, May 27 that fraudsters may have electronically accessed certain personal and account information for some of [its] clients.”

Simplii Financial advises that clients who notice suspicious activity should contact the company.

“If a client is a victim of fraud because of this issue, we will return 100% of the money lost from the affected bank account,” said Simplii Financial.

BMO also sent a warning about fraudsters on Monday morning.

“On Sunday, May 27, fraudsters contacted BMO claiming that they were in possession of certain personal and financial information for a limited number of customers,” said BMO, in a statement.

BMO said that it believes that the attack originated from “outside the country.” The company says that it is working with authorities to investigate the matter and it is contacting customers that may have been impacted.

“BMO has strong and robust processes in place to protect customer data and we take customer privacy very seriously,” said the company. “Customers are recommended to monitor their accounts and notify BMO with any suspicious activity.”
