Toronto has a brand new Greek marketplace and it's fully stocked for picnic season
Agora by Mamakas is newly opened on Queen West!
The spin-off from Ossington’s highly regarded Greek Taverna is situated opposite Trinity Bellwoods Park, and is already planning glorious picnics to come.
While the plan is to introduce hot daily specials and sandwiches in the near future, for now, the market-style eatery – Agora means market in Greek – is dishing out a selection of ready-made eats.
Find Horiatiki (village salad) and Horta (dandelion greens) on display alongside thick slabs of Moussaka, Greek yogurt parfaits, and boat-shaped flatbreads topped with lamb and potato.
Meanwhile, in a retail section, salads, dips, and imported olives are refrigerated and ready for grab-and-go. Fresh produce and a selection of pantry goods such as baklava-spiced nuts and granola, line the walls.
Baked goods here are especially noteworthy and include Koulouri (bread rings), house-made pita, and a range of flaky pastries showcasing scratch-made phyllo.
Savoury options include Spanikopita (spinach), Triopita (cheese), and Prasopita (leeks), while the sweet options, like custard-filled Bougatsa and honey-soaked Baklava, teeter between breakfast and dessert.
While there’s no shortage of coffee in the area (Sam James and White Squirrel inhabit the same stretch of Queen West), Agora is doing espresso-based drinks along with Greek coffee. Come summer, stop in for refreshments like imported soft drinks and soft-serve Greek fro-yo dressed with baklava and honey.
