Montreal is about to get even cooler.

Taking art out of artistic institutions and integrating them into daily life, Art Souterrain is hands down one of the coolest art festivals Montreal has ever hosted.

Art Souterrain is a non-profit organized founded in 2009 that is dedicated to showcasing contemporary art, artists, and the “cultural heritage of Montreal’s underground city.”

This year, Art Souterrain is celebrating its 10th anniversary by bringing together 98 projects by 94 local and international artists.

The 2018 theme of the festival is Work, and will explore the connection between different kinds of labour and jobs.

“Whether paid, volunteer, food, bureaucratic, worker, regulated or abusive, it paces our lives and defines our social condition. Depending on the country, the culture or the economic reality, work is perceived and lived differently,” said Art Souterrain on its website.

“Artists invited to present their works this year try to illustrate this diversity, both by their origins and by adopting a point of view, sometimes poetic, sometimes humorous but often critical.”

The best part? Each installation will be set in a different underground tunnel in Montreal. Art Souterrain will take over several kilometres of underground space, as well as 9 satellite spaces in the city.
