Opening this week: Arthur's brings Jewish delights to St.Henri

Jun 28 2016, 1:29 am

The St.Henri neighbourhood is about to have a new foodie haven open up shop this Wednesday, June 29.

Arthurs, a gorgeous 28-seater Jewish eatery designed with the help of In Residence design, is the newest project from culinary masterminds and couple Raegan Steinberg and Alex Cohen.

With a great deal of experience behind them, creativity for coming up with dishes that will blow your taste buds away (their pancakes are next level), and an infectious passion for food, I caught up with these two to get a little scoop on their newest baby before the doors open this week.

How long have you been in the food industry?

R: I stared cooking as a part time job in University and went to culinary school at 21. As soon as I graduated I started working at Joe Beef.

A: I started as a dishwasher 6 years ago in University and worked my way up.

Where did you get all your training?

R: At the Art Institute of Vancouver.
A: I am self-trained and just make recipes up as I go!

You started with Back of House Catering…

After we got married we decided we wanted to work for ourselves and we created BOH. We literally started out of the back of our house by cooking small meals for clients and it just took off from there.

Is that still happening?

We will be transitioning to Arthurs Catering to bring order to the insanity that is my husband’s brain!

What made you want to open your own resto?

A: This is my wife’s dream restaurant and I wanted her to be able to live that out. We put everything we have into this place and now I have to ensure that I bring honour to the name…

Tell us the meaning behind Arthur’s…

R: Arthur was my Dad and he meant the world to me. He passed away ten years ago and this is my way of keeping his amazing spirit alive. He taught me everything I know and love about food.

What sort of vibe do you want your decor to evoke?

A: We want Arthur’s to feel like a young person with an old soul…

Tell us a bit about the menu…

R: Our menu is inspired by eastern European classics such as perogies, schnitzels, cabbage rolls, and smoked fish. The same things I grew up eating but with my husbands special touch.

Your favorite dish at the resto?

R: My grandmas eggplant salad.
A: The pancake with a mix of the schnitzel and the Spanish omelet. I’m a fat kid at heart!

Is it hard working with your partner 24/7?

R: We definitely have our moments but he’s my favourite person so I couldn’t imagine not working with him. He makes my food much tastier and I keep him organized and focused.
A: Meh…..
