Facebook’s Safety Check feature has been activated in Toronto after a van ran into pedestrians on Monday, leaving nine dead and 16 others injured.

According to Facebook, Crisis Response is “a place on Facebook where you can find information about recent crises, use Safety Check to connect with friends and loved ones during a crisis, give or find help to people affected area, and create or donate to fundraisers to support recovery efforts.”

Many Torontonians have been using the feature to reach out to anyone affected in the area offering water, food, and transportation.

According to police, a white Ryder rental van mounted the curb and struck dozens of pedestrians walking along the sidewalk in the Yonge Street and Finch Avenue area.

Toronto Police Deputy Peter Yuen confirmed Monday afternoon that nine people are dead and 16 others are injured following this tragedy.

Mayor Tory is asking all business and office buildings in the area to close early for the remainder of the day and ask employees to go home.
