With lush rainforest, crystal blue waters, Mayan ruins, and the second largest reef in the world, Belize is one of Central America’s best kept secrets.

The only country to have English as its official language, it’s here that you’ll find history, culture, tradition, romance, and cuisine all tucked beneath a canopy of adventure.

Recently, Belize has seen Canadian and US resort developers attracted to the region, investing in the country’s future with an effort to turn it into a luxury destination, rivalling its neighbours in Mexico, Costa Rica, and other Caribbean spots.

One of those is Matachica, an adults-only boutique resort on the island of Ambergis Caye, owned by Montreal’s Daniel Lighter, who enlisted fellow Montreal-based brothers Byron and Dexter Peart, co-founders behind WANT Les Essentials, to give the resort a makeover.

Completed earlier this year, the resort was designed with the purpose to disconnect and turn off the world, seeking to reimagine the Belizean beach experience with a strong focus on sustainability. All complete with the fun, tropical island colours you would expect from this exotic destination.

The resort is complete with over 30 thatched-roof casitas, each painted in tropical colours with hammocks in front of their porches. They’re all technology-free (meaning no TVs, phone docks, or WiFi!) and feature hand-painted murals by Montreal artist Cecile Gariepy, which highlight native plants and animals. Her work can also be found on the hand-painted signage throughout the resort.

One of the best restaurants on the island can also be found here, where you’ll get fresh, local ingredients served up any time of the day at Mambo. Full American breakfast is included in stays, and dinner is included in most all-inclusive packages.
