If you’re tired of your streaming show lagging or your Zoom meetings being abruptly cut off, a new report can help you find the fastest internet provider in Canada.

On Tuesday, Ookla released its latest report on the country’s mobile and fixed networks.

The results are based on data from Speedtest, a site created by Ookla that allows users to test their internet connection.

The fastest carrier is chosen based on each provider’s download and upload speed.

Ookla compares user-initiated tests taken through Speedtest while connected to a fixed and mobile network.

Here’s what the company found in its latest report.

Fastest fixed internet providers

It would be best if you didn’t have to compete for fast internet access with those in your household. Whether you’re all working from home and are on video calls simultaneously or streaming Netflix to decompress in the evening, you’ll need an excellent fixed internet provider to handle the load.

For a second year in a row, Ookla’s report found that Bell pure fibre delivers the fastest fixed internet speeds out of all telecom giants.

It ranked number one for fasted median download speeds at 307.77 Mbps, up from 286.08 Mbps per Ookla’s January 2023 report.

Rogers and Telus PureFibre follow closely behind, with speeds of 270.08 and 255.88 Mbps, respectively.

At this speed, you can stream smoothly on multiple devices, download files quickly, and game to your heart’s content.

Cogeco and Videotron stood in the fourth and fifth spots, and SpaceX Starlink, which wasn’t even in the ranking last year, placed last.

You must look at the upload speed if you frequently send large files over the internet for work or leisure.

Just like a year ago, Bell pure fibre landed first place for the fastest median upload speed at 264.97 Mbps — an increase from 244.64 Mbps in January 2023.

Telus and Rogers were in second and third place, and their upload speeds also improved, averaging 215.80 Mbps and 49.44 Mbps, respectively.

“In measuring the consistency of each fixed broadband provider’s performance, we found no statistical winner for highest consistency in Canada during Q4 2023,” noted Ookla.

According to Ookla, Bell is the fastest mobile operator in Canada, with a median download speed of 121.33 Mbps. At the beginning of last year, it was 100.77 Mbps.

Telus and Rogers again followed in the second and third ranks but with improved speeds.

However, regarding the fastest median upload speed, Rogers ranks first at 15.10 — 3.6 Mbps more than offered last year.

If you use most of your data video chatting with friends and family, this will minimize the awkward delays.

Though Bell ranked second and Telus ranked third last year, they’ve switched positions this time.

Consistency-wise, Rogers reigned supreme once again.

Usually, Ookla also ranks video scores for each provider, but this time, its result did not show a statistical winner in Canada during Q4 of 2023.

When it comes to median 5G download speed, Bell was back at number one with a speed of 194.23 Mbps, followed by Telus (174.45 Mbps) and Rogers (136.39 Mbps).

Overall, it looks like internet performance has improved quite a bit across Canadian providers.

Hopefully, this helps you decide on the best internet provider for you!
