7 places to snowshoe in and around Calgary this winter

Living next to the mountains gives Calgarians the best chance to take advantage of the great outdoors, even during the cold winter months.

Sunshine Village

Sunshine Village’s Signature Snowshoe Experience is not one to be missed. Starting with a gondola and chairlift ride to 360 degree views, you begin your walk into Sunshine Meadows in untouched powder. The tour is approximately 3.5 hours.

The best part? The tour ends with in a warm lounge with traditional Swiss-style fondue!

Nose Hill Park

The infamous park north of downtown is the perfect location for snowshoeing with kids and dogs. There are dozens of trails, sufficient parking and enough space to get away from others. Bonus: there is plenty of prime toboggan spots!

Location: 5620 14 Street SW

Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area

The Cross Conservation area has 4,800 acres of rolling foothills to explore. Snowshoeing is welcome during the winter months, and you may be joined by the many species of wildlife who call this conservation home.

Location: 722 11th Avenue SW

West Bragg Creek

The West Bragg Creek Day Use Area has a trail created specifically for snowshoers. The trail is narrow with steep slopes, and you won’t run into any skiers as they have their own dedicated trail nearby.

Location: Entering into Bragg Creek onto Balsam Avenue, go left on to West Bragg Creek Road after crossing the bridge. West Bragg Creek Day Use Area is on your right after 9km.

Hogarth Lakes

40km south of Canmore, Hogarth Lakes Snowshoe Loop is the perfect location for beginners. The 4.5km trail has spectacular views will take approximately 2 hours to complete and is well sheltered from the wind. The perfect winter day in the mountains!

Location: From Canmore, take Spray Lakes Road for 45km.

Chester Lake

Chester Lake is a popular spot for both snowshoers and cross country skiers. This intermediate trail is 10km round-trip and is usually completed in about 4 hours. Its terrain varies with steep slopes, areas to relax and unbelievable views.

12 Mile Coulee (Tuscany)

Another great inner city snowshoeing trail is found in 12 Mile Coulee. The popular trail, when covered in snow, is ungroomed and perfect for the family or an afternoon date. The trail is 11km round-trip and is great as an introductory trail for the beginner.
