7 fun things to do on a rainy day in Calgary

If you’re feeling this way it’s probably because your picnic is postponed, your hike is on hiatus, your canoe trip is cancelled, and your hop scotch tournament is, let’s be honest, not happening.

But never fear. Just because it’s raining outside does’t mean you can’t have any fun. So as the wet weather looks set to take hold, here are our suggestions for seven fun things you can do indoors in Calgary.

There’s public art all over the place, but if you’re looking for a way to appreciate the finer things without standing in the rain looking at a bunch of laughing guys, there are galleries galore. Telus Spark

TELUS Spark has something for the whole family to enjoy. Take the littles one to The Brainasium, the year-round outdoor park and let them explore with all their senses at The Creative Kids Museum. Adults there’s lots for you to do here as well with their famous event of Adults Only Night on select Thursdays of the month.

Sure, you could fire up Netflix, but there’s nothing like going to the movies. The sights. The sounds. The apathetic teen employees. Vancouver has a ton of movie theatres catering to a variety of tastes, from the Scotiabank Theatre for your Hollywood Blockbusters, to the Globe Cinema for something a little more independent. See you at the movies!

Go to a museum

Why not take this opportunity to catch up on some history? Calgary is home to museums of all kinds, from the Glenbow Museum and the The Military Museums, to the Gasoline Alley Museum at Heritage Park. There’s even the Aero Space Museum of Calgary, which features displays and exhibits of over 24 aircraft and 58 aeronautical engines. And don’t forget about Studio Bell’s National Music Centre in East Village.

Watch a comedy show

There’s no shortage of fine and funny comedy shows in Calgary. Yuk Yuk’sThe Laugh Shop and Comedy Cave have weekly shows. There are a number of local shows including Comedy Monday Nights at Broken City, weekly shows at Lolita’s Lounge, and improv comedy at Loose Moose Theatre Company.

Play some games

The board game revolution is well underway. Whether you’re looking for a good old-fashioned game of Sorry! or want to solve a heart-racing mystery with games like Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective, Calgary has you covered. There are businesses all around the city that have board games alongside food, drinks, and music. Or if you’re looking for something a little more digital, the city has arcades in most movie theatres. There are even pool halls, if you’re looking for a bit of the classic.

The Escape Room craze is sweeping the globe, and Calgary is no exception. Something about being locked in a weird room with only your wits to guide you really speaks to people.
