New $5.15 monthly transit pass for city's poorest, a 95% discount

Calgary city council has approved a new reduced monthly Calgary Transit pass for low-income riders.

The new sliding scale was unanimously approved by council earlier this week, with the lowest price, $5.15, amounting to a whopping 95% discount of the regular monthly transit pass.

Starting in 2017, monthly adult bus passes for low income users will cost between $5.15 and $51.50 monthly based on their income. That is a discount of 50 to 95% off the regular monthly adult bus pass fare, which currently costs riders $99 per month.

This means that a Calgarian who makes around $12,000, below half the low income cut off, will be able to buy the pass for $5.15. The sliding scale part of it then gives someone who makes an income closer to the cut off, a 50% discount.

Calgary’s new transit pass will not cost the city any addition costs thanks to the $13.5 million of funding from the provincial government for low-income transit passes over the next three years.
