Truck driver charged in Humboldt bus crash to make first court appearance today

The 29-year-old transport truck driver responsible for the Humboldt bus crash that killed 16 people is making his first court appearance today.

Jaskirat Singh Sidhu of Alberta will appear in a courtroom in Melfort, Saskatchewan this morning and is facing 29 charges related to the fatal Humboldt Broncos bus crash.

Sidhu has been charged with 16 counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and 13 counts of dangerous operation of motor vehicle causing bodily injury.

According to Saskatchewan RCMP, Sidhu was arrested without incident on Friday, July 6 at his home in Calgary three months after the deadly crash.

On Friday, April 6, a bus carrying players and coaching staff from the Saskatchewan Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team was hit by the semi-trailer Sidhu was operating.

The crash killed 16 people, including the bus driver, while 14 others were injured.

Police say there were 29 people onboard the bus, which was en route to Nipawin for a Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League semifinals playoff game, when the crash took place about 30 km north of Tisdale, Saskatchewan.
