Autopsies have not yet been scheduled, though the EPS homicide unit is investigating the incident.

Just a few hours before the discovery of the children, Edmonton Police Service responded to a report of an assault in the same 79th Avenue and 71st Street area.

When officers arrived on scene they found a woman in distress with serious injuries. Another report came in later that night of a man “acting erratically” and breaking into a garage at 73rd Street and 80th Avenue, according to the release.

At 8:30 pm officers arrested the man, and it was determined that he was a suspect in the assault of the woman from earlier that night.

The release states that further investigation led to the police searching an apartment near where the woman was found, resulting in the discovery of the two children.

Their names, gender, and ages have not been released by the Edmonton Police Service, nor will any further information be made available for the time being.

The male suspect remains in custody.
