This year there are 34 crazy new eats being introduced at the Calgary Stampede–some a little crazier than others. You’ve got a frozen treat with crickets and edible gold, deep fried cocktail-flavoured shots, an Asian riff on perogies, rainbow grilled cheese, and oh so many things with Oreos…just to name a few.
When you hit the midway, look out for all the new tastes, along with your classic favourites. Here’s what you will find, including a few standouts that are the most intriguing:
The ultimate marriage of dill and dog: A pickle stuffed with a hot dog…then fried.
This is some next-level comfort food here. A beef burger patty stuffed with mac and cheese, then all the usual burger toppings between two buns.
A true Canadian classic is deep fried and topped with caramel and whipped cream. Oh, Canada!
Grasshopper Pie + ice cream + dark chocolate dip + crickets (!!!) + gold = The Golden Grasshopper Pie Pop.
Perogies get a major twist thanks to the addition of sautéed onions, sriracha mayonnaise, sweet ginger teriyaki sauce, green onions, crispy chicken breast strips, and seaweed. (PS these come in other global varieties, too!)
Because who needs to hold an entire sandwich?
Think rice pudding meets your favourite childhood cookie.
Picture a rainbow of fruity cheese spilling out of your sandwich. It’s like a SnapChat filter come to life on two pieces of buttery bread. Why not?
Okay, so these are non-alcoholic, but still sound fun. Tequila-flavoured cake bites are deep fried and served topped with icing sugar.
If you were a kid, you’d wish your weekend morning cereal was made of deep fried little dough balls tossed in cinnamon and sugar, and topped with Fruit Loops cereal, fresh raspberries, and a touch of condensed milk.
These are “naan” your everyday nachos: Naan with cowboy beef or bean chili, Desi chips, curry dressed slaw, cheddar cheese, tamarind chutney, chipotle crema and signature ‘Crunchies Sweeties.’
Peanut butter bacon balls, battered and fried, and drizzled with chocolate sauce and bacon bits. For the serious foodster.
Deep fried dough balls tossed in cinnamon and sugar, drizzled with homemade toffee sauce, topped with finely chopped medjool dates, served in a canoe with fresh whipped cream and sprinkled with meal worms and crickets.
A Hong Kong-style egg waffle filled with your choice of five kinds of ice cream, and toppings.
Hot dogs stuffed with cheese and hash browns, then battered and fried, corn dog-style.
A medium poached egg is wrapped in delicious sweet and spicy sausage that is combined with Center Cut Canadian Bacon and fried until crispy.
A vanilla milkshake meets Oreos, to the max, with both regular Oreos and deep fried Oreos, chocolate sauce and whipped cream.
Chicken on a stick…with a crunchy-sweet cornflake crust
Making the dreams of sweet tooths (and fans of anything pink) come true.
Fries smothered in butter chicken sauce.
Mix Oreo cookies into funnel cake batter, top with Oreo cream filling “icing,” Oreo cookies and whipped cream, and you’ve got an Oreo lover’s funnel cake fantasy made real.
Forget a hot dog, this is a straight up piece of centre-cut bacon treated to beer batter and dunk in the deep fryer.
Mac and Cheese meets an offer it can’t refused: being smothered with Italian meatballs and marinara sauce.
Seriously, what else goes well with Oreos? How about churros!
12″ local bratwurts in a pretzel bun, covered with beer mustard and fried onions.
Wrap your head–or mouth–around this: A hot dog on a stick wrapped in pretzel dough, then deep fried, brushed with warm butter and sprinkled with pretzel salt.
Popcorn, meet chocolate and caramel. These guys will “stick” together…on a stick!
Why not dunk bits of ice cream in batter and send it into the deep fryer for a hot swim?
Get a jolt from deep fried coffee bits coated in caramel and Himalayan sea salt.
You need fruit. Vitamins! So grab this meld of cantaloup and lemonade to cool down.
Mini donuts glazed in Nutella. Heavenly.
Pub grub mashup: A Steak & Guinness pasty stuffed with 100% Canadian Beef and 100% Guinness Stout, wrapped up in light, crispy puff pastry.
Try this twist on the classic hot dog…if you’re game.
The Calgary Stampede takes place July 8 to 17, 2016.
