If one thing is certain, it’s that the Calgary Stampede always brings the wacky, unconventional, and just downright weirdest eats to the midway.

But it’s those never-thought-of, never tried combinations of food that can sometimes make for the most surprising and popular dishes, year after year.

In no particular order, here are eight of the most bizarre eats at the 2018 Calgary Stampede, that you should definitely keep your eyes open for.

Oreo Creamsicle Delight

While there’s nothing too wacky or out-of-this-world with this beverage, but the combination of an orange creamsicle and the chocolate overtones of an oreo is enough to make people think twice. Depending on how brave (or unconventional) your taste buds are, you might just stumble upon the creamiest drink on the midway.

Deep Fried Bacon Wrapped Reese’s Cups

Is this treat sweet, savoury, chocolatey, or crispy? It’s anyone guess really, but the real question is if you can stomach a peanut butter cup wrapped in bacon, dipped in batter, deep-fried, and finished with powdered sugar.

Cricket Grilled Cheese

Following suit with the latest in health trends, a four-cheese blend is surrounded with thick, Texas-style toast and a hearty serving of crunchy crickets. What’s more, is that crickets are actually surprisingly high in protein, perhaps high enough to count as one of the healthier eats at the Stampede this year?

Cricket Caramel Apple

What we can only assume to be a sweet and unnervingly crispy treat, honey-flavoured, oven-roasted crickets put a creative spin on the classic caramel covered apple.

Flaming Hot Cheeto Bowls

While there’s nothing too out of the ordinary about this dish, it does raise a prominent question in today’s foodscape. How much, is too much cheese? If you’re ready to stomach down this dangerously cheesy dish, then clearly there’s no such thing.

Red Velvet Corndog

The mixture of red velvet onto a classic corndog raises a lot of questions. What flavour will prevail? The sweet, and assumingly crispy coating of the deep-fried, red velvet batter? Or the juicy, savoury flavour of a hot dog? You might want to hold the ketchup and mustard on this one, it looks to be a doozy.

Prairie Oyster Balls

Possibly one of the weirdest dishes available at this year’s Stampede, classic mini doughnut bear balls are topped with the ball of a bull – literally. What’s more, is that Prairie Oyster Balls are then dressed with a sweet blueberry compote, topped with whipped cream, and sprinkled with crushed nuts.

Cheesy Chicken Hearts

How much do you really love chicken? Enough to give these cheesylicious chicken hearts a try? The crispy exterior is mixed with a soft and delicious interior, paired with a melted cheese dip. Bon appetit!
