The Calgary Zoo has confirmed the death of 7 Humboldt penguins Thursday, December 8.

Zoo officials says the penguins were discovered this morning in Penguin Plunge. The birds were in their back holding area, which is regularly used to house the penguins.

The zoo’s Veterinary Team has determined the birds died as a result of drowning.

“This is devastating news,” said Jamie Dorgan, Director Animal Care, Calgary Zoo in a release. “We have launched a full investigation so we can try to understand what happened and prevent further incidents like this from happening again.”
