Vancouver Mural Festival Winter Arts transforms public spaces into Augmented Reality galleries
Vancouver Mural Festival (VMF) is blurring the lines between the virtual and the real world with a brand new event in February.
From February 12 to 28, VMF Winter Arts is transforming public spaces across Vancouver’s core into interactive, open-air galleries featuring Augmented Reality (AR) art.
Over 20 AR artworks by local and international artists can be found by downloading and using the VMF mobile app. Art lovers can also find all AR locations while following COVID protocol with downloadable maps found on the vanmuralfest.ca website.
“More than ever, we’ve seen the positive impact that public art and public space brings to communities. This has driven us to harness technology in a way which demonstrates the transformative power of art in our cities,” said Andrea Curtis, interim VMF Executive Director in a release. “Until we can reconvene, we will continue creating live experiences in public. We really hope this experiment brings joy and inspiration to everyone downtown and beyond.
In a year of physical distancing, VMF has created new ways to safely discover the city and connect to public art. It brightened streets and inspired hope with #MakeArtWhileApart murals on boarded-up storefronts last spring. VMF then reimagined and expanded the annual Vancouver Mural Festival last summer to nine neighbourhoods to support more communities.

VMF has a core value of diversity and inclusivity, with BIPOC artists and curators making up over 50 percent of the 2021 Winter Fest roster. International artists from Vienna, Tokyo, Ho Chi Minh, and Dallas as well as 10 local artists from Vancouver, Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil Waututh can be discovered during the 16-day event.
VMF will also be hosting a series of free online public workshops and discussions in partnership with the Vancouver Public Library. The events will highlight participating artists and offer opportunities for dialogue and connection around the artwork.
