Largest-ever UBC event to celebrate International Women's Day is taking place on March 8
UBC is set to host its first ever International Women’s Day celebration next month.
It’s going to be the university’s largest ever event and it’s taking place on Thursday, March 8 at TELUS Garden in collaboration with non-profit society for emerging female leaders, Young Women in Business (YWiB).
The two-hour event is set to feature a variety of activities, talks from keynote speakers, a panel of women from diverse professions, a silent auction, appetizers, photos, and more in the stunning West Georgia Street high-rise.
YWiB is collaborating with some of the best UBC female clubs, including Equal Voice, Women in Science, Her Campus, and SisuGirls to make this event the largest and most interactive International Women’s Day event in Vancouver and UBC alone.
“UBC has not held an International Women’s Day event yet, so I am proud to say YWiB UBC is the first to do so. We believe it is important to celebrate women every day, but especially on the national day. The objective of the event is to inspire young people to push themselves to their full potential by showcasing successful women of Vancouver and their personal & professional journey,” says Samyta Rai, VP of finance at YWiB UBC.
Keynote speakers at the event include CEO and president of BC Hydro, and chair of Canada Post, Jessica McDonald, and vice president of Consumer Health, Juggy Sihota. There’s also going to be a panel featuring a female politician, an athlete, and a PhD science professor from UBC to give their insight from various industries.
‘Pave Your Path’, the slogan for the event aims to highlight the fact that everyone has a different pathway to success – sometimes anticipated, sometimes unexpected. With that being said, the keynote speakers will be sharing their journeys to success with you as an attendee, defining one’s turning points.
The silent auction on the event will see items like a homemade Semperviva gift card, a $200 VIDA Spa message gift card, Burgoo and Browns Social House gift cards, a gift from Bombay Brow Bar, a MYO Cosmetic Case, and a one-night stay at any Coast Hotels location. All the proceeds raised from the auction will be donated to the Downtown Eastside Women’s Shelter.
