5 ways you'll feel like a superhero after donating your pre-loved clothes

Spring is the perfect time to start fresh and do a complete overhaul of your wardrobe.

And if you’re all about Marie Kondo’s KonMari method for tidying up and decluttering, you’ve probably already begun. If not, don’t worry — you’re not alone.

All you have to do is ask yourself whether you’ll actually wear those pieces at the back of your wardrobe ever again. If you’ve fallen out of love with a pair of jeans, a sweater, or maybe a winter coat, that doesn’t mean that they won’t find a special place in someone else’s life.

If you’re puzzled about where to donate your pre-loved clothing, stay with us. Vancouver non-profit, Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver, lets you book a free (and easy) clothing collection service, all for a fantastic cause!

Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver even gives a $200 gift card to one of their clothing donors every month, and once a year, they give away a $5,000 dream vacation to a clothing donor as part of their Sweepstakes. This gives you even more of a wonderful incentive to donate your pre-loved clothing to the organization.

So let’s take a look at the ways you’ll feel like a superhero after donating clothing to this organization.

You’ll be helping a special cause

Every year, Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver turns the proceeds from donations collected into mentorship programs for more than 1,200 children and youth in the Greater Vancouver area. The non-profit believes that with a positive role model, a child can gain a sense of belonging, a reassurance of their strengths, and (more importantly) they can be inspired to reach their full potential.

The reality is that the wait time for these programs can be up to two years, which is why your clothing donation has the power to help with funding.

You’ll feel incredibly rewarded

Doing a good deed has the power to make you feel good, and donating your clothes shouldn’t be any different. When you do so with Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver, your help goes further than you could imagine, to benefit the lives of youth in your community — that’s something to be proud of.

You’ll be helping to reduce textile wastage

An increase in clothing consumption around the world has led to higher levels of textile waste. In Canada, the average person throws out 81 pounds of textiles annually, according to statistics by Waste Reduction Week in Canada. We can each do our bit to help reduce textile wastage, and by donating your clothing to Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver you can help stop textiles going to landfill. In 2018, the non-profit collected more than 13.8 million pounds of clothing and you can help them beat their goal of 20 million pounds in 2019.

You can reinvent your style

Aside from freeing up space in your wardrobe (and your life) when you donate clothing, you’ve also got the opportunity to reinvent your style. This could involve pairing shoes that you forgot you ever had with a recently-purchased suit or dress. Here’s the thing: You only really need 33 pieces of clothing to build a capsule wardrobe. Once you have these narrowed down, you can mix and match to regularly reinvent your style.

You’ll save precious time in your day

When you’ve got a wardrobe that you can navigate, you can have all of your clothing organized neatly. In turn, this makes it easier for you to choose what to wear each morning. You can also create space specifically for your gym clothes so preparing for those after-work classes first thing is a breeze — simply grab your workout apparel and go.
