Facebook and Instagram testing options to hide 'like' counts

There may be less of a reason to do anything for the ‘gram as Instagram users may eventually be able to hide the “like” counts on the photos they post to the app.

Facebook, which owns the company, confirmed they are testing an option that will allow users to choose if their followers can see the number of “likes” they receive.

“In 2019, we began hiding like counts for a small group of people to understand if it reduces some of the pressure when posting to Instagram,” a Facebook company spokesperson told Daily Hive. “Some people found this beneficial, but some still wanted to see like counts so they can track what’s trending and popular.”

The social media company said that based on their findings they are exploring a new option that lets their users decide how they want to best experience the app. That means users will have the option to not only turn off the “like” count with respect to their own photos, but users will be able to avoid seeing how many “likes” other people’s photos have accumulated as well.

The company will be testing the option on Instagram and is also exploring similar options on Facebook.

It first started testing hiding “like” counts in 2019, but the new tests focus on giving users options rather than disabling the feature.

There’s no timeline for when the options might be available to more users.
