To her friends and family she is simply Christine, the always smiling, sometimes clumsy, fun loving girl. To the rest of Vancouver she is known as DJ Yurie, a rising star in Vancouver’s DJ scene. We caught up with Christine and asked her a few questions.
VcB: Why DJing?
Christine: When I first got into DJing, I never thought it would be something I’d later take so seriously. I’ve been in love with music since I can remember, and being classically trained from a young age in piano, theory, and voice, the transition to learning how to DJ came easily. It just felt like the next natural musical step to take.
VcB: What are some of your musical influences?
Christine: I first got into listening to electronic music by having a healthy obsession with The Chemical Brothers. I love how distinct their sound is. I’m also influenced by any other artist/DJ/producer who is truly unique, a few of them being Diplo, SBTRKT, Tokimonsta…
VcB: Where do you currently hold down residencies in Vancouver?
Christine: At the moment I’m at Bar None for ‘Grand St. Friday’s’ and BLVD22 for ‘City Saturdays’. I’ll also rotate at different venues on some of these nights, so you can stay updated where I’ll be playing through my FB page!
VcB: Being a female DJ, do you find that you have to prove yourself a little more to get the respect you deserve?
Christine: I know when I first meet people, being a female I’m not always taken seriously as a DJ. But I really work hard on my craft because there are skeptics out there who are just waiting for you to mess up. It’s fun to have that extra bit of challenge though to make sure I’m always on my toes and to always be unique in my style in some way.
VcB: If you could only have 5 tracks on your iPod what would they be?
Christine: Of course that list is always changing! At the moment though, I’d have to say in no particular order:
- City Of Dreams – Dirty South & Alesso ft. Ruben Haze
- Mercy (RL Grime & Salva Remix) – Kanye West
- Rise & Fall – Adventure Club ft. Krewella
- Silhouettes (Syn Cole Creamfields Mix) – Avicii
- Follow You (Original Mix) – Deniz Koyu ft. Wynter Gordon
Christine: I’m still trying to decide between ‘The Macarena’ on a hip-hop night, or ‘Anything Taylor Swift’ on a house music night.
Christine: I love living in Vancouver for many reasons, one of those being the mass of amazing artists/DJ’s that are brought into this city. I like going out to show’s to keep my ear’s fresh with different music. And any of my friends can attest to my love for eating Japanese food.
Christine: YOLO. (No I’m completely kidding.)If you’re extremely passionate about something and you want to do it for the right reasons, why not give it try. Work hard to make it happen so you’ll never have that regretful ‘what if’ feeling. I always imagine that would be a terrible way to live.
