City of Vancouver prepares for weekend snow with 100 trucks, 3,000 tonnes of salt

With 100 snow and ice vehicles and 3,000 tonnes of salt, the City of Vancouver says it is prepared for the snow and colder temperatures expected this weekend.

According to Environment Canada, up to 5 cm of snowfall is expected on Saturday and Sunday.

The city says crews are monitoring weather reports and a “response plan is underway” with key routes including major roads, bus routes, bridges and the 15 most-used pathways and bike routes currently being treated for ice and snow.

“This year, to help our essential workers clear the roads on snowy days we are asking residents to only undertake essential travel on the roads and bike routes,” notes the city.

“If you do need to be on the roads, travel with caution and please give way to, or stay at a safe distance when following a salt and plow truck. If your vehicle is parked on a major route, please plan ahead by moving it to a side street or garage.”

The City of Vancouver is also reminding its residents to clear any snow from walkways and sidewalks before it hardens to ice. Property owners and occupants are required to clear snow and ice from sidewalks around their property by 10 am, seven days a week.

Three warming centres have been opened, with visitors encouraged to bring their carts and pets. The Powell Street Gateway, Vancouver Aquatic Centre, and Creekside Community Centre opened today and will continue to be open through to January 27.
