This cat yoga class lets you unwind with adoptable kitties

If you’re looking for a way to make yoga better, the answer is always cats.

Sweet Serenity Yoga and Wellness is hosting cat yoga on Sunday, August 11.

The session is open to everyone — no yoga experience required — with a minimum $15 donation with proceeds going to the Delta Community Animal Shelter (DCAS). The money will go to the Tollie Fund, which helps support animals who require medical attention.

Cats from the shelter, who are all adoptable, will be roaming around the studio during the session.

“It starts like a regular yoga class, but then the cats get curious and wander in and out of the practice.” Jenine Lehfeldt, the owner of the yoga studio, said in a release.

“I’ll sometimes pick them up and deliver them around the room too. There’s lots of giggling, the mood is really great.”

Ashley Spires, a children’s book author and illustrator, fosters kittens for DCAS.

“It fills my heart with joy to know I can help kittens when they’re most vulnerable, and then the shelter can find perfect homes and families for them based on their personalities and needs,” Spires said.

Ryan Voutilainen, DCAS’s animal shelter manager, said that socializing cats at events like cat yoga better prepares them for adoption. There are currently over 20 cats in the shelter and another 36 in foster care (Here’s a look at its current adoptable animal roster).

“Senior animals and animals with medical conditions are always harder to adopt out, but we want people to really take the time to consider them, especially because they tend to be the ones that have the most love to give.” He said.

For those who can’t attend the class but still want to help out, the studio accepts cash or donations of food, scratch pads, and food/puzzle toys.
