There’s always room for a slice (or two) of pie, even after the biggest of holiday meals. Luckily Vancouver is full of great places for pie, so there is no shortage of sweet or savoury slivers or slabs to go around.
Whether you like your pie filled to bursting with fresh local berries, tangy and topped with meringue, or chocolate creamy, we’ve got plenty of pie, any way you slice it. Here are our picks for who’s serving up the best pie in Vancouver.
Vancouver first got to know Jenell Parsons and her delicious pies just a few years ago through the Make It Market and other local events. Though The Pie Hole doesn’t have a retail storefront you can order for pick up, or find their pies at a variety of places around town. Their savoury pie list includes the popular Bacon Cheeseburger Pie and Mac and Cheese Pie, and their sweet list has options like Maple French Toast Bacon Pie or their celebrated Fat Elvis, along with more traditional fruit and cream selections.
Tartine has a tight list of hand-crafted pies, including Maple Cream, Banoffee, Bumbleberry, and Cider Apple. They’re known for their Cherry Tarts, which make a great intro to their delicious pies.
Address: 720 Beach Avenue, Yaletown
This packed cafe is a longstanding local favourite, and serves up some memorable (and big!) slices of pie. Standouts are their Chocolate Banana Cream Pie and their Raspberry Rhubarb Pie. Aprhrodite’s is also known for their vegan and gluten-free pies, too.
Address: 3598 W 4th Avenue, Kitsilano
The Pie Shoppe’s storefront is tiny but mighty, serving up slices of some of their signature pies, like Chocolate Pecan and their much-loved Apple. They’re also home to local micro-roaster Panoramic Coffee, so you can pick up a bag of beans to take home with your pie.
Address: 721 Gore Avenue, Chinatown
West Vancouver’s Savary Island Pie Company is to many the gold standard of local pie making. Although their shop has been closed since late 2014 due to flooding, they are still taking orders for delivery. They are known for their Chicken Pot Pie (and its zingier curry version), as well as their sweet fruit pies.
Address: 1533 Marine Drive, West Vancouver (temporarily closed; call for delivery orders)
Black Rook Bakehouse is a bakery cafe and neighbourhood favourite that recently moved into spacious new digs. Pies of note include their Coconut Cream, Chocolate Brownie Cream Pie, and Beef Brisket Pot Pie, and, if you’re willing to take the liberty with what’s considered pie, their quiches are tasty, too.
Address: 2474 E Hastings Street, Hastings-Sunrise
East Village Bakery specializes in artisan scratch baking, and have become beloved for their gluten-free goodies, though, of course, their regular menu items are delicious, too. Check out their standout fruit pies.
Address: 2166 E Hastings Street, Grandview-Woodlands
The Little Fruit Pie Company makes the most of the bounty of B.C. berries, and their pies are available fresh or frozen and in the flavours of the season. Look for Little Fruit pies south of the Fraser, like in Richmond and South Delta, with plans to find distribution in White Rock in 2015. Richmond Country Farms (open April through December), sells Little Fruit’s frozen bake your own pies, and fresh baked pies every weekend from July 1 through Christmas.
Address: Seasonal onsite sales at Richmond Country Farms, Richmond and Backroads Market, Tsawwassen; or order by phone. More info here.
Aussie Pie Guy was launched in 2013 by Matt Fitzhardinge of Perth, Australia, Kayleigh Lum and Linda Lowery (both of Vancouver) after they got a craving for quality Aussie pie in Vancouver and couldn’t find one.
