BC Transit to resume fare collection and front-door boarding on buses in June

May 4 2020, 11:58 pm

BC Transit will readopt front-door boarding and fare collection policies on June 1 in all of the communities served by their bus services.

In order to return to these normal practices, a temporary vinyl shield will be installed on all buses without a bus driver shield to better protect drivers and riders.

These measures are identical to TransLink’s plan announced earlier today that it will resume front-door boarding and fare collection on June 1 by installing vinyl shields on the remaining fleet without bus driver shields. Rear-door-only boarding will end on this date.

In developing the new measures, both public transit authorities have aligned with the direction from BC’s provincial health officer.

BC Transit and TransLink stopped front-door boarding and fare collection six weeks ago to reduce the interaction between drivers and passengers, and promote physical distancing.

The provincial public transit authority says it has also practiced enhanced cleansing, increased its communication to staff and riders about physical distancing, limited passenger capacity on each bus, and enhanced the red line behind the driver for passengers.
