Banter Room replaces Romer's Burger Bar in Yaletown

Blink and you’ll miss the restaurant switcheroos in Yaletown these days. The quirky streets in this ‘hood are packed with spots for eating and drinking, and when one goes, it isn’t long before another takes its place.

Case in point: A new concept called Banter Room is up and running in the former Romer’s Burger Bar location on Mainland after a few months’ renovation.

Banter Room serves lunch, dinner, and drinks with the evening meal service aimed at dishing up food that’s meant to be shared. That means that while at lunch time you can get salads, burgers, and even some breakfast-esque dishes for yourself, the emphasis come dinnertime is on “family style” platters and meals and share plates.

But…you kind of have to plan ahead, according to their website:

“Our food is meant to be shared among friends. These unique family style dishes will make you feel at home, with enough to satisfy four of your chosen family. We only have a limited number of these offerings per night so make sure you order early.”

Plus they suggest you pair your $85 to $185 chicken, fish, or steak dinner with cocktails, friends, and “banter.” (That’s an exchanging of gently teasing remarks, by the way.)  Some of the dishes here are called family-style, but it seems like you shouldn’t bring your actual family here. Got it.

If your “chosen family” wants to order a la carte, or go splitsies on other dishes, Banter Room’s dinner menu also has soups, salads, pasta, and “Platters & Socials,” i.e. a bunch of tacos, some Lobster Avocado Toast to share, fried chicken, or a burger duo.

The food is all over the globe, though the decor and the drinks menu have a stronger tinge of Latin America. You can order anything from a Michelada (Clamato meets beer in this Mexican staple) to a Bad Hombre (a margarita), or a “LYCHEE MUTHAF****” (order it and see how chill your family is), or your choice of beer and wine and other cocktails.

Banter Room is open daily, though they don’t start serving until 1 pm Sunday through Tuesday, but open up at 11 am Wednesday through Saturday. Hang out until midnight Sunday through Tuesday, until 12:30 am on Wednesdays, and until 1 am Thursday through Saturday.
