The average shopper in Vancouver throws away the equivalent of 44 t-shirts every year. But if you’re someone who wants to take a more sustainable approach to shopping and promoting the second-hand economy, there’s an event you won’t want to miss.

ARCHIVE, Vancouver’s largest bi-annual consignment warehouse sale, is happening on Friday, May 31 and Saturday, June 1, bringing thousands of pre-loved items to Main Street’s Heritage Hall.

You can shop everything from contemporary to luxury apparel and accessories for men, women, and children. And since ARCHIVE doesn’t curate their selection and accepts items for sale, including $1 tees and $2,000 designer handbags, you could find some stellar one-of-a-kind pieces.

Co-founded by Randa Salloum and Kelly Turner, ARCHIVE aims to encourage the community to create a circular economy. “Through our social media channels, we provide education and empowerment in textile sustainability, providing informative posts to promote better choices,” says Randa Salloum.

Salloum is the founder of Vancouver-based CIEL Creative Marketing and an award-winning lifestyle blogger of her self-titled site. Meanwhile, Turner is the founder of one of Vancouver’s largest local shopping markets, Fall for Local, as well as the founder of entrepreneurial speaker event, Local Talks.

The first ARCHIVE event took place last November and saved a total of 500 lbs of apparel and accessories from the landfills. On May 31, they’re aiming to triple that amount.

Since ARCHIVE’s inception, Salloum and Turner have re-grown the event to include luxury resale retailers, including RELUXE and Mine and Yours, to integrate deeper community connections.

“RELUXE will be featuring both men’s and ladies handbags and accessories from brands like Louis Vuitton, Prada, and Gucci,” says Garth Jackson, founder of RELUXE Luxury Resale Company.

“ARCHIVE is a fantastic opportunity to network and meet like-minded people in our community. As RELUXE is an online business, this is the perfect opportunity to purchase products in person and meet our team.”

With support by Vancity Credit Union, ARCHIVE features a moderation of a sustainability speaker panel and stations where shoppers can weigh their purchases to acknowledge how much apparel they have personally diverted from the landfills.

You’ll also have the chance to learn about opportunities for re-selling your own clothing after ARCHIVE, as US marketplace POSHMARK is also a sponsor of the event.

“We have been keeping busy with our newest three-month pop-up shop on South Granville and cannot wait to open the doors at Heritage Hall for shoppers. We’ll have new arrivals featuring brands like Chanel, Hermes, and Christian Dior,” says Mine and Yours owner Courtney Watkins.

Visit ARCHIVE to find out how you could sell your pre-loved clothes at the next event. Sellers provide ARCHIVE with their items, and at the end of the event, they get a cheque for 60% commission of their sales — double compared to what most consignment stores are offering.
