90+ companies that are currently hiring in Canada amid coronavirus pandemic

HR leaders in the Canadian tech community have put together a list of more than 90 companies that are currently hiring amidst the COVID-19 chaos.

Spearheaded by Shirley Andriesh, Erin Girard at Spare Labs, and Preet Jassal of the Vehicle Sales Authority of BC, the list is a living document that will include more employers as time goes on.

Job-seekers can currently access more than 2,000 open roles via the list.

Andriesh explains that the goal was to help people whose jobs are imperilled by the current situation. “I wanted to do something that would help them find their next opportunity until their primary industry gets back on its feet,” she says.

The initiative is a direct response to the unemployment and layoffs that have hit Canada hard since the coronavirus pandemic forced many businesses to close or scale back operations. Estimates by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA) suggest that two million people could soon be out of work.

In response, the Federal Government has taken measures to expand Employment Insurance (EI) coverage and create an emergency fund to help those who are unable to work or have been laid off.

However, many companies are also taking matters into their own hands to support those currently looking for work. It’s also a sign of hope for the creators of the list. “The list shows that many businesses are continuing operations and are actively engaged in growing their teams,” says Jassal.

Some of the companies on the list include SkyHive, Canuck Place Children’s Hospice, Spare Labs, and Fresh Prep Foods in BC; Amazon, FreshBooks, Hootsuite, and Highline Beta in Toronto; Wattpad in Halifax; and many others across Canada.

The available positions cross many industries and departments. Thinkific, for example, currently has 20 positions open in customer support, marketing, recruitment, and engineering.

“Being able to connect with people who we can provide great jobs to while also allowing them to make an impact on our company and our customers is a great opportunity,” shares Dalena Nguyen, talent branding specialist at Thinkific.

Interested candidates can view the live document and click through to the companies’ career pages and job listings. Some hiring managers have also included their emails in the sheet to better connect with applicants.
