Toronto Public Health has launched a cannabis campaign.

On Monday, the City’s Public Health launched the educational campaign to “promote safe and responsible cannabis use.”

The campaign targets parents and caregivers, and reminds people to safely store cannabis in a locked area and out of reach of children.

“We’re excited to launch this new public education campaign to promote responsible use for people that consume cannabis,” said Dr. Eileen de Villa, Toronto Medical Officer of Health. “We know that cannabis is not a benign substance and evidence shows there are a range of potential health harms. This campaign uses a lighthearted and creative approach to promote an important message.”

There are immediate and long-term health concerns with consuming cannabis around children, according to Toronto Public Health.

They recommend not to smoke or vaporize cannabis inside the home or when children are present.

They also recommend storing all cannabis products in locked areas, and ensure children can’t see or reach the locked area in which the cannabis is stored.

Councillor Joe Cressy said that while legalizing cannabis is long overdue, the City must educate the public on the potential negative impacts.

“We know that kids get into everything. This is why campaigns like this are so important to remind parents and caregivers that if they are intending to use cannabis, they should safely store their cannabis in a locked area and out of reach of children,” said Dr. Villa.
