Oakland Athletics shout out World Series-bound Canadian Little Leaguers

For the first time since 1984, Canada will be represented by Coquitlam at the Little League World Series.

Coquitlam Little League defeated a team from Mirabel, Quebec, winning 6-3 in the final of the Canadian championship over the weekend in Ancaster, Ontario.

That win booked Coquitlam’s ticket to the Little League World Series, which begins today in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

The tournament is a big deal, with all games being broadcasted nationally in the United States on ESPN and on TSN in Canada. It’s a first-class event, and obviously the thrill of a lifetime for the 1o to 12-year-old kids that get to play in it.

But as Coquitlam prepares to trade their green and gold uniforms for red and white Canada ones, they got a pretty cool shout out from a Major League Baseball team.

The Oakland Athletics like their style, sending out this tweet to their 561,400 followers:

“The town of Coquitlam, BC has embraced the A’s as their hometown Little League team for the past 20 years, and green and gold as the city’s colours for even longer than that,” the A’s official account tweeted. “We’re proud to see our iconic cap on the international stage at the [Little League] World Series.”

It’s no wonder the A’s approve of Coquitlam’s uniforms. The kids wear the same caps as the Oakland Major Leaguers, with green and gold uniforms to match.

Canada has never won the Little League World Series since first participating in the tournament in 1952. They came close in 1965, when a team from Stoney Creek, Ontario finished second. They finished third on two occasions, with great efforts from two British Columbian teams: Trail in 1990 and Langley in 1998.

BC has dominated Canadian Little League baseball for more than a decade, with teams from Surrey, White Rock, Vancouver, Langley, and Coquitlam representing Canada in 14 of the last 15 World Series.
