Why the house dress is a trend that’s here to stay for fall

Sep 3 2020, 6:42 pm

These days, a busy social calendar for most of us includes scheduled outdoor exercise, trips to the grocery store, and perhaps a socially distanced patio session or two. At this point, we’re okay with that.

Since many of us transitioned to working from home almost immediately after the pandemic started, there wasn’t much time to figure out what our day-to-day outfits would look like. Sadly, wearing actual pyjamas isn’t an option when you’ve got Zoom meetings.

However, the house dress, a trend that’s consistently being tagged on Instagram, is providing us with the perfect happy medium. What exactly is a house dress? It’s a garment that’s designed with practicality and comfort in mind. Think flowy, boho styles, and anything cotton or linen.

The term “house dress” dates back to the early twentieth century, a time when the late American fashion designer Nell Donnelly Reed released her first collection of affordable gingham house dresses — only to quickly sell out due to demand — in 1916.

Now, we’re frequently seeing A-listers like Alexa Chung, Selena Gomez, and Cara Delevingne rocking different styles of house dresses. It makes sense since these timeless pieces symbolize casual wear with just the right amount of glamour for impromptu trips out in public.

Having a staple house dress (or three) as part of a WFH wardrobe means there’s one less decision to make each day. And at a time when there is much uncertainty around us, every little win counts. If you do have to leave the house, pair the dress with sandals or boots, and you’re set. Then, when the weather gets colder, layer the dress over tights.

Reformation and Aritzia have gorgeous house dresses in a plethora of styles and fabrics for transitioning through fall, and H&M has even more options for every budget. With that in mind, here are some of our current favourites from the retailer.
