5 homemade face mask recipes to try while you’re indoors

Apr 1 2020, 1:51 pm

At this point during quarantine, we’re getting around to things that we would typically leave on our to-do list for some time. This could be a spot of interior design, reading a book, or focusing more on healthy eating.

But what about your beauty routine? Although staying inside is helping us to protect our skin from the sun’s UV rays, it’s still important to maintain your skincare routine, or better yet, try something new.

Salons and spas are closed for the foreseeable future, so now is the perfect time to get creative with the ingredients you already have in your pantry. Pop on your go-to playlist or the show you’re currently binge-watching and try one of the following homemade face mask recipes to achieve a dewy glow.

Oatmeal is a staple almost everyone has at home, and it can be used in everything from overnight oats to savoury snacks. When it comes to skincare, finely ground oats may help reduce symptoms of dry and itchy skin conditions. Here’s everything you’ll need for your first oatmeal face mask:

  • 5 tablespoons of ground oatmeal
  • 1/2 cup of warm water or milk
  • 2 tablespoons of honey (optional)

Simply mix the above into a paste and apply it evenly on your face. Leave the mask on for 20 minutes and rinse it off with warm water.

Avocado face mask

If you’re looking to use that avocado in your pantry for something other than toast, why not try a face mask? Avocado oil is incredibly absorbent and it is said to help skin stay hydrated, smooth, and to calm itchiness. What you’ll need:

  • 1/2 a ripe avocado (mashed)
  • 1 tablespoon of avocado oil
  • 1 tablespoon of honey

Mash the ingredients into a paste, apply it evenly to your face, and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes. Wash off the mask using warm water.

Banana face mask

Bananas are the perfect snack while you work from home because they’re loaded with nutrients, including potassium, vitamin C, and vitamin B-6, with traces of vitamin A. But this superfruit is also a great base for a face mask as it contains silica which could help increase natural collagen production. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1/2 a banana (mashed)
  • 1 tablespoon of honey
  • 1 tablespoon of orange juice

Mix the ingredients and apply the mask to your face. Leave the mask on for 15 minutes and rinse it off with warm water before moisturizing your skin.

Turmeric face mask

It doesn’t have to be wintertime to enjoy a warm latte (today is a pretty good day). But what happens to the rest of the turmeric you have in your panty? This spice is known for its anti-inflammatory properties which can help calm the skin and target your pores, as well as potentially clear up breakouts. What you’ll need:

  • 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder
  • 2 tablespoons of plain yogurt

Stir the ingredients into a paste. Apply the mask and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes before washing it off with warm water. Pro tip: use a dark coloured towel as turmeric may stain.

Honey lemon face mask

Lemon juice has the power to zest up a recipe, infuse a DIY herbal tea, and act as a central face mask ingredient. It naturally contains vitamin C so it’s got antioxidant qualities, and since lemon has high PH levels, it can help reduce inflammation and oiliness. What you’ll need:

  • 1/2 tablespoon of raw honey
  • 1 teaspoon of lemon juice
  • 1 egg white

Combine the ingredients in a bowl and whisk until the mixture has a foamy texture. Apply the paste evenly to your face (avoiding the eye area) and leave it on for 20 minutes. Rinse it off with warm water.

Once you’ve chosen a recipe based on your skin type and needs, it’s time to lie back and enjoy the little moments of bliss — at home.
