Health Canada is recalling hand sanitizers for possibly posing health risks.

On Monday, Health Canada said they are “advising Canadians that the following hand sanitizers are being recalled because they may pose health risks.”

One of the products from After Dark Distillery was an alcohol hand rub that did not have risk statements and was not authorized to contain technical-grade ethanol. Three of the batches were recalled.

And Porter’s Tonic, who made a helping hands ethanol sanitizer, also did not have risk statements and was not authorized to contain technical-grade ethanol. Three lots were also recalled.

Because the COVID-19 pandemic has created a high demand for hand sanitizers, Health Canada is permitting the temporary use of technical-grade ethanol in alcohol-based hand sanitizers.

But manufacturers wishing to use technical-grade ethanol must choose from a list of Health Canada-authorized suppliers. They must receive a No Objection Letter from the agency before they can manufacture or distribute the product.

“Health Canada maintains this list of hand sanitizers that may pose health risks, so that Canadians can easily identify products they may have purchased and take appropriate action. Canadians are encouraged to check it regularly for updates,” the statement said.
