Most Canadian employers are still not ready for marijuana legalization this summer, according to a new study by Business of Cannabis.
The study was conducted in partnership with the Public Services Health & Safety Association (PSHSA) and the Human Resources Professionals Association (HRPA).
The January 2018 survey of 680 HRPA members found 71% of workplaces were not prepared for the impact of cannabis legalization.
According to blogpost by Business of Canada, the most pressing issue for 47.8% of respondents was ensuring a safe workplace.
Other concerns cited were getting further clarity on best practices, with employers saying they need guidance, guidelines and sample policies to best address the issue.
Scott Allinson, VP of Public Affairs at the HRPA, said more needs to be done.
“Employers are simply not yet equipped with the knowledge and the resources they need to ensure that their workplaces are prepared for legalized marijuana,” said Allinson.
“Balancing these legal changes with the imperative to provide a safe workplace for all is a challenging transition – and employers need the right tools for the job.”
