Dress up your life to raise funds for Canadian breast cancer research

The Breast Cancer Society of Canada (BCSC) is hosting a massive fundraiser this month, and all you have to do is dress things up.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and from now until October 31, the non-profit charity is hosting its 2020 fundraiser — Dress for the Cause.

The fundraiser has taken place annually since 1998 and since its inaugural year has raised more than $10 million. Funds raised have since supported research for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of the disease.

This year’s campaign has gone digital and, despite looking a little different, will be just as fun.

From the very first day of October to the last, the BCSC is challenging everyone to participate in weekly dress-up themes. You won’t just be dressing yourself up, however — you’ll be dressing up every part of your life. Consider it a month-long costume and makeover challenge that supports a very good cause.

Each week includes a different object and theme to dress up and share on social media. The first week of October calls for decorations on a house, office, doggy, or garage door. The second week requires a costume for your desk, meaning that it’s time for a makeover to your home office or any workspace (let’s be honest, you were planning for a makeover anyway).

For the third week of October, participants can dress up their best… anything! Whether it’s a prized possession, a pet, or a car, the possibilities are endless. And for the fourth week, just in time for Halloween, it’s time to dress yourself up.

Week 1: Dress up your door (house, office, doggy door, car garage)

Week 2: Dress up your desk (home office, company office, or any workspace)

Week 3: Dress up your best (prized possession, pets, car, boat)

Week 4: Dress up yourself (anything pink, Halloween costumes, hats, shoes)

Participants can be as creative and imaginative as they’d like — just know the use of pink is highly encouraged. Don’t forget to share your costume or makeover on social media afterwards!

Fundraising can be done in multiple ways, whether it’s creating your own challenge or tagging coworkers and friends on various social channels.

“With more people working from home and students learning online, we are creating new ways to get people involved,” said Kimberly Carson, CEO of the BCSC.

The BCSC adds that this year, more than 27,400 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Not to mention, one in eight women in Canada will be diagnosed within their lifetime.

“Everyone knows someone who has been affected by breast cancer,” Carson stresses. “We invite all Canadians to dress for the cause during International Breast Cancer Awareness Month to support research to find a cure.”
