America Voted: Donald Trump elected President of the United States

Donald Trump will be the next US President, after a shock victory over Hillary Clinton in a historic election on Tuesday night.

Clinton conceded the race to Trump, who has never served public office before, in a phone call in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Speaking to supporters at his victory rally, Trump called the election a “complicated business.”

“Hillary has worked very hard and very long over a long period of time and we owe her a major debt of gratitude for her service to this country,” he said.

But now, he said, it was time for the United States to get together and “bind the wounds of division.”

“It’s time for us to come together as one united people,” said Trump. “I pledge to every citizen of our land that I will be president for all our people – this is so important to me.”

‘Forgotten men and women’

Ultimately, said Trump, he had not so much helmed a campaign, as a movement.

“It was an incredible and great movement, made up of millions of hardworking men and women who love their country and want a better brighter future for them and their family.”

“The forgotten men and women of our country will be forgotten no longer.”

Both the House of Representatives and Senate are predicted to remain a Republican majority.

“We’re going to get to work immediately for the American people and we’re going to be doing a job that hopefully you’ll be so proud of your president,” said Trump.

“Again, it’s my honour. I love this country.”
