The Canadian ethics committee voted in favour Tuesday evening to issue a subpoena for appearances from Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and COO Sheryl Sandberg at a hearing scheduled for later this month.

The hearing will probe the Cambridge Analytical scandal that saw data from as many as 87 million Facebook users improperly shared with the IT company.

When asked about the subpoena, a Facebook spokesperson said in a statement to Daily Hive the company will be represented at the meeting.

“Over the last year, we have participated in numerous meetings and hearings with government bodies around the world. We will work with the Committee to ensure Facebook is appropriately represented at the May 28 meeting.”

According to the company, Facebook takes the protection of its platform, and people’s personal information very seriously.

“That’s why we devote significant time, energy and resources to these issues,” said the spokesperson.

“Demonstrating our commitment to continued collaboration with policy makers and regulators, over the last year we have held lengthy meetings or evidence sessions in multiple countries.”

“In all cases the witnesses provided have been senior and experienced members of the Facebook team who we believe have been best placed to respond to the broad range of questions being asked.”

The hearing is scheduled in Ottawa for May 29.
