There's one thing holding back thousands of young professionals (SURVEY)

It’s a new decade, and the digital landscape has changed dramatically in the last ten years. Instead of lining up for a new iPad, we’re now in the era of self-driving cars and AI.

And not only is the world we live in totally different, but theĀ work we doĀ has changed, too. With that change comes the need for new digital skills, including data science, UX design, product management, and social media marketing, among many others. So how do you best prepare yourself for the future? And where do you invest your time and money?

To find out which digital skills are in greatest demand,Ā BrainStation held its second annual Digital Skills SurveyĀ last November. The survey also aimed to find out which recruiting and training options were the most impactful for employees and employers.

Thousands of professionals participated in the 2020 BrainStation Digital Skills Survey, sharing their day-to-day experiences in the workplace, what they want from professional development, and what they envisage for the future of work.

And theĀ results were very interesting. First, the majority of people who took the survey said that additional digital skills training would help them be more successful in their current workplace. This includes 89% of professionals in digital marketing, 80% in development, and 72% of executives across all fields.

Second, the survey results confirmed that digital transformation was a top strategic business priority, as 74% of companies were undergoing digital transformation prior to 2020, with 18% more saying they plan to increase digital investments and initiatives in the future.

The survey results also shone a light on how rapidly the digital landscape is changing, as 80% of executives said that there were new elements of their products and services that did not exist just five years ago.

With the move towards a more digital workplace, reskilling and upskilling are crucial to success at work. The survey showed that this is already underway, with 42% of executives saying they have already implemented digital skills training in their offices, and 19% saying they plan to in the future.

Another finding from the survey was the continued rise of data-driven roles, specifically data scientists. Approximately 68% of data scientists surveyed have only worked in their field for five years or less, and 76% didn’t begin their career in data. So if you’re good with numbers, 2020 might be the year to take data courses!

The bottom line? Digital skills training is no longer just a good idea, it’s a professional necessity. Respondents from every field surveyed ā€” including data, development,Ā design, marketing, product management, and executive teams ā€” said that having a more digitally savvy workplace would make their organization more successful.

But we have a long way to go. Over three-quarters of those who took the survey said that data literacy is currently lacking in their organization, and a whopping 89% said this is affecting the success of the business.

With so much evidence pointing towards the future of highly digital workplace, it makes sense to think about levelling up your digital skills.
