'Rancid' baby formula product being recalled across Canada

A baby formula distributed across Canada is being recalled due to what officials say is “rancidity and off-colour.”

According to the the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), Abbott Laboratories is recalling Abbott brand Calcilo XD powder from the marketplace due to rancidity and off-colour.

In particular, consumers are advised to avoid the product in its 375g size, with the codes  70074 53329 2 and 79696K80 on the packaging.

For those who have the product in their home, the CFIA advises that the product be thrown out or returned to the location where it was purchased.

The recall applies to product purchased in Alberta, BC, Manitoba, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Quebec, and Saskatchewan

“Food that is rancid, has an unusual odour or smells ‘off’ should not be consumed,” the CFIA said. “Consumption of rancid food may cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.”

Noting that the recall was triggered by the company and that the product is being removed from the marketplace, the CFIA said it is conducting a food safety investigation, “which may lead to the recall of other products.”

“If other high-risk products are recalled, the CFIA will notify the public through updated Food Recall Warnings,” it added.

There have been reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product, thus far.
