Canada's airport security lineups must get shorter: Transport Minister

The Canadian government plans to introduce new rules to help you get through airport security lineups faster and know your rights if your luggage goes missing.

Speaking to the Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Montréal this week, Transport Minister Marc Garneau said Canada needs to do better.

“Long lineups at screening checkpoints should be the exception but that is not the case,” said Garneau. “Too many Canadians are waiting too long.”

In some European airports, said Garneau, passengers only have to wait 10 minutes or less in security, and he plans to look into new equipment and innovations to keep up.

As well, the government will be examining the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority to try to make it more accountable for its actions.

Also in the works is an Air Travellers Passenger Rights Regime to establish basic requirements, so you know what your rights are and when you can get in compensation.

The plans are part of a new $10.1 billion government strategy, Transportation 2030, which aims to build an innovative and integrated transportation system across Canada.
