Engagement shoots are a good idea. They give you a chance to work with your photographer before your wedding, both to get comfortable in front of the camera and to make sure you’ve chosen the right person to capture your day.
We encourage couples to stay true to themselves for these shoots. Choose a location that means something to you and an activity that you actually partake in on a regular basis; visiting your favourite coffee shop, walking your dog, you get the idea.
On the flip side, avoid incorporating themes or props that will cause you to look back at your photos in 20 years and wonder what the heck you were thinking.
Here are 5 props to avoid:
1. Balloons
When has walking down the street or through a field of tall grass carrying a giant balloon ever made logical sense? It hasn’t.
Skip the balloons and if you feel more comfortable carrying something, think about a prop that makes sense for your relationship.
2. Cheesy signs
“He asked…and she said yes!” We get it, hence you’re taking engagement photos.
It’s obvious that you’re in love, otherwise we hope you wouldn’t be getting married. So leave the signs at home and let the photos speak for themselves.
3. Scrabble tiles
Can you say overdone? Unless you play Scrabble on the regular, there’s no need to spell out your love for one another.
Plus, the close up of the tiles in your hands with the blurred out photo of you two kissing in the background is so distracting.
4. Instruments you don’t play
If your man doesn’t play the guitar, don’t get him to pretend serenade you for the photo op. The photos will come across as forced and disingenuous.
5. Anything too themey
If Star Wars is your thing, cool, but do you really need to include lightsabers in your engagement shoot? Think long and hard before going overly themey for your photos, you might be face palming a few years from now.
