350,000 video doorbells are being recalled as they may catch fire

More than 350,000 Ring Video Doorbells are being recalled because they can overheat and may catch fire, causing burns.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission issued the recall of the second generation of the smart doorbells on November 10.

About 350,000 affected products were sold in the US from June 2020 to October 2020. An additional 8,700 were sold in Canada.

The Ring Video Doorbells (2nd Gen) come with both security and wood screws for installation.

“The video doorbell’s battery can overheat when the incorrect screws are used for installation, posing fire and burn hazards,” according to the recall.

However, if the doorbell is installed correctly, there is no risk of fire or burns.

The doorbells being recalled have the model number 5UM5E5. Ring Video Doorbell owners can determine if their item is part of the recall by entering the serial number online.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission has reported 85 incident reports of incorrect doorbell screws installed with 23 of those doorbells igniting, resulting in minor property damage. The firm has received eight reports of minor burns.
