Nearly 20,000 Amazon employees have tested positive for coronavirus

Amazon announced Friday that 19,816 employees among Amazon and Whole Foods Market across the country have tested positive or been presumed positive for COVID-19.

The figure was 42% lower than Amazon’s initial estimate, which used the general population rate to calculate 33,952 cases among the 1,372,000-person workforce.

Tests are currently being conducted through several Amazon labs, which have been created by the tech company out of a team of research scientists, program managers, lab technicians, and more. The company claims to be conducting thousands of tests a day and hopes to complete 50,000 tests a day across 650 sites by November.

Amazon will be testing their employees regularly and broadly to help identify asymptomatic individuals who have contracted the coronavirus.

Identifying the carriers would mean catching the virus earlier before it spreads.
