The Product Department at Daily Hive is looking for an experienced Senior React Developer to join our team. You will have end-to-end responsibility on projects of increasing complexity and you will be able to mentor other team members by working collaboratively and conducting code reviews. Senior Developers continue to gain experience by working on industry-leading concepts and standards, with an emphasis on scalability and security, while delivering products that are well-developed and bug-free.

Daily Hive’s website supplies local news stories to over 65 Million readers per year and supports businesses within the community. The team’s current focus is developing business Guides and expanding into new Cities across North America. You will be part of this and more!

What you'll do

  • Software development to build new products, features, and integrations for the Daily Hive website
  • Work in a fast paced, agile environment while collaborating in a cross functional Scrum team and partnering with other departments as necessary
  • Partake in Daily Stand Up, Sprint Demos, Sprint Planning & Backlog grooming meetings
  • Lead code reviews and recommend best practices
  • Leave your fingerprints on the design of products, architect our infrastructure, and improve technical documentation
  • Be the go-to technical expert for other people in the organization, articulating technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
  • Write code and mentor teammates as they test-drive code for new features and bug fixes
  • Be responsible for setting maintenance schedules & update architecture diagrams accordingly
  • Use and improve our CI/CD pipeline, development standards, tooling, and processes
  • Have full ownership of the systems you and your team develop. This includes monitoring, investigating issues, and supporting the service during outages

Must haves

  • 5+ years experience developing and maintaining scalable production software that stands up to real-world users and production conditions
  • Front End: React, NextJS, SCSS/SASS/LESS experience
  • Back End: NodeJS, Express
  • Databases: MySQL, Postgres
  • Ability to create & test API routes
  • Capable of bug fixing & troubleshooting
  • Integrations: Google Analytics, Google Ad Manager, Stripe, SparkPost, Viafoura, Momently, Jira, GitHub
  • An excellent understanding of software engineering techniques, programming languages, and Test-Driven Development practices
  • Ability to lead technical architecture discussions and help drive technical decisions within your team
  • Effective communicator who is able to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical team members
  • Experience mentoring junior and intermediate developers

Nice to haves

  • You’ve worked in an agile environment using processes like Kanban or Scrum, or want to
  • WordPress: updating WP core and installing plugins, with a good grasp of Advanced Custom Fields or similar plugin and PHP
  • DevOps: basic understanding of AWS or GCP, Cloudflare, AWS Fargate, Docker
  • Strong communication skills to partner with our DevOps vendors

  • Participate in and promote technical excellence within the Daily Hive development team
  • Working with the team to understand and refine requirements, break work down into manageable subtasks, and design practical solutions
  • Promoting best practices for protecting our user’s security and data
  • Writing clean, maintainable code with good test coverage
  • Helping the team make technical decisions that deliver on short-term needs while working towards long-term goals
  • Effectively communicating technical decisions
  • Making regular contributions to the team's processes, roadmap, and architecture
  • Helping improve the operational reliability of the team's systems
